What is the OptiLight/IPL?

OptiLight by Lumenis is a controlled treatment that uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat dry eye disease from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The wavelengths of light treatment address inflammation, which can be one of the main underlying causes of MGD and dry eye disease. The device uses patented Optimal Pulse Technology to precisely target the more delicate areas below the eye. By reducing inflammation, the meibomian glands are better able to lubricate the eye, stabilize the tear film, and alleviate your dry eye symptoms like blurry vision, dry or watery eyes, and eye pain.

How Does OptiLight Work Dry Eye Management?

OptiLight uses light energy to liquefy and release any oils that have hardened and clogged the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. With these glands no longer clogged, they can release their oils, allowing the eye to be properly lubricated and improving the quality of your tears.

The light energy also helps decrease inflammation, eliminate abnormal blood vessels, delay how long it takes for tears to evaporate, and decrease the amount of bacteria living around the eye.

At Eye Consultants, we proudly offer Lumenis’ patented Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™). This new technology offers precise, yet comfortable, treatments for dry eyes. Dr. Long is also an expert and leading provider for Optilight and IPL for dry eye disease, so you could not be in better hands.

What to Expect From OptiLight Treatment

OptiLight treatment is a relatively simple procedure. Your eye doctor will cover your eyes with shields to protect them from the light and then apply a thin layer of cooling gel to the treatment area. From there, the light is applied to the skin below the eyes. At most, you will feel a warming sensation in the treatment area. Each session takes 10 to 15 minutes, and with no downtime, you can return to your normal level of activities immediately.

We typically recommend four sessions, spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Typically, patients report minimal discomfort throughout the procedure.

After OptiLight Treatment

You may experience some redness or blurred vision immediately after treatment, but that will subside within a few hours to a few days. Beyond that, you can return to your normal routine immediately, including using makeup. You will want to stay out of direct sunlight for a few days and regularly apply sunscreen.

Patients typically report improvement after their second or third session. Maintenance treatment every 6-12 months is recommended for long-term results.

What is OptiLight/IPL?

OptiLight is the first and only FDA-approved, non-invasive, intense pulsed light (IPL) procedure specifically designed to treat dry eye disease, particularly that caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It uses precise, broad-spectrum light pulses to reduce inflammation, unclog glands, and improve tear stability, often providing long-term relief.

How does OptiLight work for dry eye?

OptiLight works by using targeted light pulses around the eyelids. The heat from the light reduces inflammation, melts clogged oils in the eyelids, reduces bacteria/mites, and improves tear quality for long-lasting relief.

Who performs OptiLight treatment?

OptiLight treatment is typically performed by qualified eye care professionals, such as optometrists and ophthalmologists, who specialize in managing dry eye disease, particularly cases related to meibomian gland dysfunction. Our team, including Dr. Dealy, Dr. Considine, and Dr. Long, will walk you through the entire process.

What is Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™)?

Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) is an advanced, patented Lumenis IPL technology that ensures consistent and safe energy delivery. It provides customized, gentle, and effective results for dry eye management, but it can also work for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, and vascular lesions.

What should I expect during the procedure?

On average, OptiLight is a 10–15 minute procedure. To start, we will apply a cool gel, and then your doctor will use the specialized handheld device to apply light pulses to the skin around your eyelids to stimulate the meibomian glands. You may feel a mild warming or tapping sensation, but the procedure is designed to be comfortable and, in many cases, soothing.

How many sessions are needed?

A standard OptiLight dry eye treatment involves four sessions, typically spaced two to four weeks apart. Patients often start seeing improvements in symptoms after the second or third session. To maintain results, we recommend repeated sessions every 6 to 12 months.

Is there any downtime after OptiLight?

No, there is no downtime after OptiLight. You can go back to your normal routine immediately. You may notice some temporary mild redness, warmth, or slight swelling around the eyes, but that typically subsides within a few hours.

Are there any precautions after treatment?

After your OptiLight treatment, you’ll want to protect your skin from direct sunlight for at least a week. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly. You’ll also want to stay away from harsh skin products, skip hot showers or saunas for 48 hours, and use eye drops if you notice any grittiness.

How long do the results last?

Typically, the results of OptiLight last for six to twelve months after the initial series of four sessions. While not permanent, the treatment significantly reduces symptoms for most patients. To maintain your results, we recommend treatments every 6-12 months.

Who is a good candidate for OptiLight?

OptiLight is an ideal treatment for adults with chronic dry eye disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and particularly those who haven't found relief through traditional methods like eyedrops. It is also best suited for individuals with symptoms like burning, redness, or blurry vision.
