At Eye Consultants, we are proud to offer Optos retinal imaging, an advanced solution that enhances your comprehensive eye exam without the need for traditional dilation. This innovative retinal imaging technology provides a detailed view of the back of the eye, helping detect early signs of retinal disease, often before symptoms such as blurry vision or vision loss appear. If you’ve ever delayed an eye exam because of dilation, Optos offers a faster, more comfortable alternative designed for your lifestyle.

What is Retinal Imaging?

Retinal imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows your eye doctor to capture images of the retina, including the optic nerve, blood vessels, and retinal pigment epithelium. Using Optos technology, we can obtain ultra-widefield retinal images, also known as Opto map imaging, that capture up to 200 degrees of the retina in a single scan.

This goes far beyond traditional fundus photography, offering high-resolution images of the retinal periphery that are often missed during standard exams. This helps retinal imaging detect serious eye conditions, including:

  • Diabetic retinopathy and diabetes related macular edema
  • Macular degeneration, including age-related macular degeneration
  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Other retinal conditions affecting the central vision

In some cases, additional testing, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) or fluorescein angiography, may be recommended to evaluate blood flow or specific areas of concern.

Who Needs Optos Retinal Imaging?

While traditional dilation has long been a main method for evaluating the back of your eye, it has several drawbacks. Dilating drops are used to widen your pupils, allowing eye health care professionals to better view the central part of the eye and the optic disc. However, these special drops can cause:

  • Temporary light sensitivity (you may need to wear sunglasses)
  • Blurred near vision for reading, phone use, and computer work for a few hours
  • Difficulty driving, especially immediately after your appointment
  • Extended appointment times due to waiting for the dilation to take effect
  • Rare risk of an allergic reaction

For patients with busy schedules, the side effects of traditional dilation can easily disrupt the rest of the day, making it difficult to drive, work, or complete everyday tasks. That’s why Optos retinal imaging is an excellent option for a wide range of individuals seeking a more convenient and efficient experience.

What to Expect During Retinal Imaging

With Optos retinal imaging, your visit is quick, comfortable, and highly efficient. During your eye exam, you’ll simply place your chin on the imaging device and focus on a small target light.

Using advanced scanning technology and low-intensity green light, the system captures high-resolution digital images of both eyes in just seconds. The process is completely non-invasive and requires no preparation. There are no dilating drops, no discomfort, and no downtime.

The resulting ultra-widefield images provide a detailed view of the retina, including areas that are often difficult to see with traditional methods. These images support more accurate clinical decision-making and effective disease management, while also allowing your provider to track changes over time and detect signs of potential eye conditions early.

After Retinal Imaging

Unlike traditional dilation, there is no lingering light sensitivity or blurred near vision, so you can safely drive right away and continue with your day without interruption. There’s no need to rearrange your schedule, take time off work, or rely on someone else for transportation. By eliminating the common inconveniences associated with dilation, Optos provides a more convenient and patient-friendly experience, making it an excellent choice for those seeking efficient, modern eye care without disruption.
