What are Premium Intraocular Lenses?
Premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that can replace the eye’s natural lenses during cataract surgery. They can allow you to see far away or near with less need for glasses or contact lenses, and can correct astigmatism. The right lens for you depends on your vision issues and eye health concerns.
Types of Intraocular Lenses We Offer at Eye Consultants
We offer advanced intraocular lens technology to help patients safely restore clear vision based on their specific vision needs.
Monofocal
The most common type of intraocular lens is the monofocal lens. As the name suggests, this lens allows you to see either at a distance or close up, not both. Patients with monofocal lenses often need to still wear glasses for certain activities.
That said, at Eye Consultants, we can use monovision, a technique where we use a monofocal lens to correct for distance in one eye (usually your dominant eye) and another monofocal lens to correct for near vision in the other eye. When looking at an object, your brain will merge the images from both eyes to create a clearer picture at both distances.
Toric
For people with astigmatism, the toric IOL is typically used to correct the uneven curve in the cornea. The cornea should have a spherical, rounded shape, but people with astigmatism have a football-shaped cornea. Toric lenses are specially designed and shaped to fit over the natural lens and correct astigmatism. These intraocular lens implants can come as monofocal or multifocal.
Multifocal
Multifocal IOLs provide both near and far distance vision. The IOL implants are equipped with multiple rings that reflect and focus light at different distances, providing improved vision when reading, driving, and engaging in other daily activities. Patients with multifocal IOLs may not need to wear glasses after surgery.
Extended Depth-Of-Focus
Extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOLs are also used to sharpen near and far vision. However, instead of using multiple focal points, as the multifocal lens does, EDOF lenses elongate the focal point, allowing for a better and clearer range of vision.
