What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a form of cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance around the eyes and removes sagging skin that could reduce your peripheral vision. It can also address saggy or puffy lower eyelids by removing excess fat and skin. The procedure can be done on the upper or lower eyelids or both.
Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty include adults (usually over the age of 30) in generally good health who are nonsmokers and have realistic expectations and a positive outlook. It’s also for those without serious eye conditions who are struggling with excess skin and fat on the upper or lower eyelids and/or sagging or puffy bags under the eyes.
What to Expect From Blepharoplasty
What occurs during your blepharoplasty depends on whether you’re having a lower or upper eyelid surgery or both. No matter what kind of eyelid surgery you’re having done, the procedure will begin with the administration of anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable.
For an upper blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. From there, they will remove excess skin, muscle, and fat to lift the eyelid and then close the incision.
For a lower blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision just below your lower lash line. They’ll then remove excess skin and muscle. They may also make another hidden incision to remove or redistribute excess fat or correct other lower eyelid concerns.
The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on what you’re having done.
Blepharoplasty Recovery
After surgery, you will likely have some swelling, bruising, discomfort, light sensitivity, and blurred vision, but that will subside over the next days and weeks as you heal. You’ll want to take 1-2 weeks off work to rest and recover, and you’ll need to limit any strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks.
To help ease swelling, use cold compresses, elevate your head when lying down, and avoid laying on the affected area. You’ll also want to avoid smoking, excess sun exposure, rubbing your eyes, and wearing contact lenses for two weeks.
You’ll likely see some results as the swelling goes down, but it can take a few months before you are fully healed and able to see the final results.
