What is Laser Resurfacing?

Pigmentation, sun spots, age spots, and redness are common skin conditions. They are usually a cosmetic concern and vary in size, shape, and depth. With laser skin resurfacing, we can successfully treat pigmentation on both facial and body areas, regardless of skin type, achieving brighter, more uniform-looking skin with minimal downtime.

At Eye Consultants, we employ the The Lumenis IPL with OPT™ to achieve outstanding laser resurfacing results. This technology is considered the ‘Gold Standard’ in photorejuvenation treatments. The versatility of Lumenis’ IPL enables effective and comprehensive treatment of a wide range of pigmented lesions such as vascular lesions, sun spots, age spots, redness, and more.

Who is a Candidate?

If you are bothered by unwanted pigmented or vascular lesions, laser resurfacing may be right for you. However, those with compromised immune systems, coagulation disorders, or a history of herpes simplex near the treatment site may not be ideal candidates. To learn more about this treatment and if it is right for you, please contact Eye Consultants in Wilmington, DE, today.

How Does Laser Resurfacing Work?

During your Lumenis IPL laser resurfacing treatment, intense pulses of light are distributed across the skin, targeting unwanted pigmented and vascular lesions. These light pulses are absorbed by the pigment in the skin or hemoglobin in blood vessels, eliminating these targets. The “Optimal Pulse Technology” ensures that energy is delivered consistently with precise control over pulse duration and intensity. This reduces the risk of burns or side effects, making the treatment safe for different skin types.

What to Expect from Laser Resurfacing Treatment

To begin your laser resurfacing treatment, your skin will be cleansed to remove any makeup, oils, and sunscreen. A cool gel may also be applied to the treatment area to assist the IPL device in gliding smoothly across your skin. Eyewear should be worn to protect your eyes from the bright light pulses.

Your provider will move the IPL handpiece over the treatment area, delivering pulses of intense pulsed light. The handpiece also has built-in cooling technology to ensure your comfort.

After Laser Resurfacing

Redness and mild swelling may occur directly after Lumenis IPL treatment. Your skin may be slightly red and feel warm, similar to a sunburn. If your treatment is aimed at addressing pigmentation, the treated spots may appear darker before fading and flaking off. There is no downtime required, so you can return to your regular activities as soon as you wish.

To maintain results, avoid direct sunlight and apply sunscreen when outdoors. Most people require a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart for best results.

Skin Resurfacing FAQs

What is skin resurfacing, and how does it work?

Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated laser light to improve skin texture, tone, and tightness by removing the damaged outer layers of the skin and heating the underlying skin to stimulate new collagen growth. It can treat everything from wrinkles to scars to sun damage and pigmentation.

Who is a good candidate for skin resurfacing?

If you are bothered by hyperpigmentation, visible veins, and/or lines and wrinkles, you are likely a good candidate for skin resurfacing. Additionally, we recommend that you be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and be a nonsmoker. To ensure this is the right treatment for your needs, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation today.

What skin concerns can skin resurfacing treat?

Our laser skin surfacing treatment can address a wide range of concerns, including lines and wrinkles, pigmentation concerns, vascular lesions, sun damage, age spots, and redness.

What types of skin resurfacing treatments are available?

At Eye Consultants, we offer the Lumenis IPL laser resurfacing. Because of its versatility and effectiveness, it can address a variety of skin concerns, including vascular lesions, sun spots, age spots, redness, and more.

How long does it take to see results after skin resurfacing?

It typically takes 1-3 weeks before you see significant results after your laser resurfacing. It can take time for the collagen to build up in the skin and for unwanted veins to fully disappear.

Is skin resurfacing painful?

No, our laser skin resurfacing treatment is not painful at all. At most, you feel a warm sensation and a snapping feeling.

What is the recovery time after a skin resurfacing treatment?

There is little to no downtime or recovery after skin resurfacing treatment. You may notice some redness or swelling after treatment, but it typically dissipates within a few days. Beyond that, you can return to work and most of your normal activities immediately.

How many skin resurfacing sessions will I need?

How many skin resurfacing sessions you need will depend on your skin concerns and the results you’re looking for. On average, patients often need 3-6 treatment sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Are the results of skin resurfacing permanent?

While the results of skin resurfacing are not considered permanent, they are long-lasting. Our Lumenis IPL treatment can effectively remove sun spots, veins, and pigmentation, but as the skin ages, those issues can come up again. Receiving maintenance treatments can help keep your skin looking its best.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with skin resurfacing?

There are very few side effects associated with skin resurfacing. The most common include swelling, redness, temporary darkness of pigmentation, and a sunburnt feeling, but these side effects typically subside within a few days.
